Butterscotch Fun Facts:
- One is its obvious connection to the country of Scotland. Buttery toffee is sometimes called butterscotch. Another is that the word Scotch was derived from the word "Scorch." The word "Butterscotch" was first recorded in Doncaster, a Yorkshire city in England, by Samuel Parkinson who began making candy in 1817.
- Butterscotch candies received a huge jump in fame in England as they were presented to Queen Victoria in 1951, when she was a visitor to Yorkshire, the area credited with the invention of this treat.
- While butterscotch and caramel are similar, the main distinction is that butterscotch is made with brown sugar while caramel is made with white sugar. Caramel is white granulated sugar that's been heated slowly to 340 degrees Fahrenheit. This gradual heating process breaks down the sugar's molecules and creates a deep golden brown color and rich flavor. Who knew?
